Men vs Women: who are better at EQ leadership?
Men and women in leadership roles, who exhibit higher Emotional Intelligence leadership? When this question is posed, the majority would argue in favor of women. This perception is easily understandable as women are often seen as more openly expressive of emotions, something that men may feel hesitant to discuss or convey.
Statistical data derived from millions of individuals who have undergone EQ assessments reveals that there is no significant variance in average EQ between men and women. Nonetheless, disparities exist in the components of EQ. Women typically achieve higher scores in empathy, relationship building, and social responsibility, whereas men tend to score higher in decisiveness, confidence, and the ability to manage pressure.
This outcome logically aligns with society's perception of each gender. When envisaging a leader, we often think towards qualities traditionally associated with men, such as competitiveness, determination, decisiveness, and independence. Rarely do we envision a leader as someone empathetic, connected, supportive, and encouraging. Even if we do, these attributes are often regarded as secondary to the 'strong' traits mentioned earlier.
Despite its subtlety, this bias poses a disadvantage for women in the context of leadership positions. However, studies conducted by HayGroup Boston indicate that within the top 10% of the most proficient leaders, there exists no gender disparity in any EQ indicators. This suggests that both men and women must excel in empathy and connection skills, alongside decisiveness and pressure management, to emerge as exceptional leaders.
The definition of leadership has evolved significantly compared to decades past. Therefore, we must adapt to truly integrate and thrive. Fortunately, these skills can be developed and honed.
